This page explains, in plain language, what WhoOwesWho does with information when you use the site. It describes how the site works today.

What is stored on your device

The calculator runs in your browser. It saves these things in your browser's local storage:

Your current group: names, expenses, amounts and the group name
Your currency choice for the group
Your language preference
Your advertising-consent choice

WhoOwesWho does not intentionally upload this group and expense data to its servers. If you clear your browser's site data, it is removed.

Share links

When you create a share link, the group's data (names, expenses and amounts) is carried inside the link itself, after the # sign. That part of the link is not sent to our servers when the page opens. Anyone who has the link can see the group information it contains, so only share it with people you trust.

Anonymous usage counts

To understand whether the site is useful, WhoOwesWho records simple anonymous events, such as "calculation completed", "shared via WhatsApp" (or another share option) and "shared link opened", together with the site language and the time of the event.

Our own anonymous usage events do not include names or expense amounts. WhoOwesWho does not intentionally store IP addresses as part of this analytics data; our hosting provider may process IP addresses in standard server logs as part of operating and securing the service.

Contact form

If you send a message through the Contact page, we receive your name, email address, reason for contacting and message. They are kept so we can read and reply to your message, and are only accessible to the site owner through a protected admin area. They are never shown publicly.

Third-party services

Google AdSense — the site may show ads from Google. Google may use cookies or similar technologies to serve and measure ads. Personalised ads are only used where you have given consent; your choice is saved in your browser. See Cookies & ads for details.
Google Fonts — the site's typeface is loaded from Google's font servers, so your browser contacts Google when a page loads.
Hosting provider — like any website, the host processes standard technical information (such as IP address, browser type and requested pages) needed to deliver and secure the site.

Your choices

Clear your browser's storage for this site to remove saved groups and preferences.
Choose to accept or decline personalised ads in the cookie banner. To change your choice later, use "Change ad choice" in the footer.
Use the Contact page to ask us to delete a message you sent us.
