Road trips rack up frequent, small payments โ€” a fill-up here, a toll there โ€” usually paid by whoever's driving or holds the card at the counter. The totals only make sense once you add them all up.

You can go further than an equal split by working out actual fuel cost from distance and consumption, which is useful if the group changes size partway through the trip (someone flies home early, another joins later).

Tolls and motels are usually flat per-leg costs, so they split evenly among whoever was in the car or the room for that stretch.

Worked examples with real numbers

Three friends, one car, a 600km trip

Three friends drive 600km. The car does 8 litres per 100km, fuel costs 1.60 per litre, and they hit 24 in tolls. Wren pays for fuel, Xan pays the tolls.

Group size changes partway through

Four people drive the first 300km together, then one flies home and the remaining three (including the driver) drive the last 250km. Fuel is bought in two separate fill-ups.

Fill-up 1 (32.55) splits four ways at 8.14 each; fill-up 2 (27.13) splits three ways at 9.04 each (rounded to 9.04). Passenger A only owes the first leg's 8.14, while the driver and the two who stayed the whole way owe both legs' shares (17.18 each).

Mistakes that cause arguments

  • Splitting total fuel evenly when the group size changed

    If someone joined or left partway, split each fill-up by who was actually in the car for that leg, not the whole trip's headcount.

  • Ignoring who drove

    Some groups build in a small discount for the driver's time and wear on their car โ€” decide this upfront, not after the trip.

  • Forgetting parking and toll receipts

    These are easy to lose track of when paid in cash at a booth โ€” log them the moment you pay.

Should the driver pay less?
Many groups exclude the driver from fuel, or add a flat car cost split between passengers only. Both are easy with per-expense participants.
